CHARACTER
Name: Krista
Age: Appears to be around eight years old, is actually two in reality.
Appearance: Krista is an artificial human, a clone of a long-dead young girl, created by her mother in the girl's memory. She appears to be a rather small eight year old, but in fact is only around two or three (sped up clone growing, you know how it goes), though she ages normally.

Krista is, more than anything else, small. She's only 3''5, and delicate-looking, like she might break like a china doll if handled too roughly. Krista has long cornflower blonde hair that falls down to her knees, usually left unstyled, and her eyes are red. Her face is quite doll like, with large eyes and rosy cheeks and her features are quite obviously Germanic.

She prefers big, baggy clothes that are clearly too big for her -- she finds it comforting and she's just kind of used to it. Most of the time, she dresses in baggy sweaters and skirts, with stockings -- she's not really used to shoes and doesn't like them much. When she's persuaded to dress in clothes that actually fits, she's quite fond of dresses and blouses and skirts. She mostly favours bright colours, but prefers red and white.

Krista's posture isn't notable for a girl her age and stature -- she doesn't slouch too badly but her posture isn't perfect either. She holds herself a little awkwardly, as if she's not entirely sure about how she's supposed to stand. When she's confronted with new people, she tends to hide behinds her clothes -- using her sleeves to cover the bottom half of her face and the like. She also fiddles with her hair when she's nervous.

Krista doesn't talk much either -- most of what she wants to say she conveys in gestures or noises rather than words. When she does speak, she does so in short sentences or even single words. Her voice is soft and high and she speaks with an obvious German accent.
Chosen PB: Mashiro Kamitsuka, from the manga Kamikami Kaeshi

Personality: On the surface, Krista doesn’t appear that much different from any other bright, quiet eight year old. She’s polite and a bit shy around unfamiliar people but at first glance, there’s nothing that noteworthy about her.

Krista is very quiet and rarely talks -- she will verbalize a lot (gasps or exclamations) but doesn't often say much, instead getting most of what she wants to say across by body language or even just gestures. Her emotions don't often breech the surface, and most of the time her face is help in a kind of passive curiosity. That’s not to say that she doesn’t feel, of course -- like any other little girl, she can smile and laugh or frown and cry. It’s just that most of her reactions happen below the surface, leading her to have a constantly calm and neutral demeanour that rarely falters, except in extreme cases.

The only emotion that Krista seems to freely express is curiosity – and make no mistake, Krista is curious about everything. This is only partially something built into her (the more she learns, the more information she collects after all) and mostly due to the fact that she craves understanding. She's been stuck on the S.S Vulcan her whole life and her only exposure to the outside world were books and videos. She loves to learn and is an eager and excellent student who will absorb whatever’s being taught to her like a sponge. Her curiosity will often trump her shyness and in more extreme situations, can lead to her placing herself in danger to follow whatever's caught her interest.

Her knowledge doesn't stop her from being a child however and she's still easily charmed and surprised by things that would appeal to girls her age -- cartoons, cute animals and magic tricks (even if she works out the trick itself, she's still rather impressed by the illusion). She loves books, especially fairy tales and fantasy stories and is most content curled up with one,

All in all, Krista is really just a bright, quiet little girl. It just so happens that there's some more going on under the surface.
World Information: It's half past the future (okay, about two hundred years really) and humanity has finally managed to break past the Earth's gravity permanently and begun so spread around the galaxy. For the time being, humanity has managed to occupy most of the solar system, with the six furthest planets from the sun occupied -- some by civilians and some by the government. The system is split into two sectors, Inner and Outer -- Earth, Mars and Jupiter being Inner and Saturn, Uranus and Neptune being outer.

But the planets aren't the only stop off points for humanity -- there are hundreds of space stations dotted around space as stop off points for those travelling through. Some still functioning and full of life, some abandoned. The most prominant is the Startport, a stop-off point that serves as the border between the Inner and Outer sectors and has to be passed through to reach the outer planets -- the trip's too long to even think about trying otherwise.

The condition of humaniy at this point is... well, strained but hopeful. A third world war occured during humanity's first tentative steps into space. It literally decimated the population and accelerated the plans for terraforming the other planets. For twenty years, Earth was uninhabitable and humanity was stuck, fractured between the various space stations that had been completed in time.

And, to put a long story short, humanity made it. The planets are inhabited, people are... mostly happy with their lives on said planets. And that leaves empty space stations. A lot of empty space stations.

Empty space stations that are absolutely perfect for someone looking to make a quick buck to salvage from.

People who are sick of living in the megacities that span the planets, people who don't fit in -- most of them go to the skies and nearly all of them take up piracy, savaging from the space stations left abandoned by humanity's descent to the planets below. Salvage and piracy isn't really viewed as that big a deal -- sure, it's technically illegal and there are plenty of big corporations who will stomp and scream about the loss of property but there isn't much effort put into enforcing those laws. As long as you don't get caught, no one cares that much.

Most of the people who go into salvage can be put into one of three distinct categories -- the history nerds who have romanticized views of the life and dream of finding history and beautiful artefacts in dead space, those who couldn't care less about the history and just want the cash -- and then there's the real pirates who target other salvagers and swoop in at the last second to steal their finds.

The universal currency of the human race is 'credits'. It was easier than trying to work out the inflation rates of thousands of different currencies over nine different planets.

Basically, think of something along the lines of Cowboy Beebop and Outlaw Star and you've got the right sort of idea.

The technology level is fairly advanced from our own time -- cyborgs are part and parcel of everyday life, medical science can work miracles... it's your typical sci-fi space western setting.

History: Krista was born on a government funded space station orbiting Mars, the S.S Vulcan, dedicated to scientific experimentation and research. She was the end result of a project headed by Professor Fredericka Eisenberg, a project given to her by the government -- specifically the Society for the Betterment of Humanity -- to try and create improvements to the human brain, to alter it genetically to allow it to retain information better.

Fredericka decided to go one better by making a human who would never forget anything.

So she began her work, slaving over the project over a course of twenty years and working herself nearly to death to see it to its completeion. The project was still only in its infancy when disatser struck -- Fredericka's daughter, barely out of childhood, was killed in an accident around the station.

Blinded with grief, Fredericka dedicated the project to her daughter -- using everything from the girl's first name to her genetic material to slowly build this altered human, creating what she hoped would be a perfect clone.

But Fredericka never saw her second daughter's birth. Just a year before the project's completion, a combination of stress, bad health and general not taking care of herself combined to give her a massive heart attack that killed her.

And so, Erika was born into a cool and sterile world, surrounded by people that while never cruel were distant and never openly showed affection. For the first two years of her life she knew nothing but the floor of the space station that she lived in and occasionally the testing bay where she was taken to be poked and prodded and generally checked up on. It was a lonely way to grow up, but Krista, who had never known anything better, didn't know she was lonely.

It was then that the third disaster struck. A virus that had been contained within the station that the scientists were researching -- well, you can guess the rest. Someone made a careless mistake, the virus got lose ad killed people. Lots of people.

The entire space station. Except for Krista, who was safe and isolated in her own floor.

By sheer fortune and coincidence, barely a week after the disaster, the station was docked by a salvager -- one Kai Spiegelman, who was in search of something he could sell for a profit and instead found a whole lot of dead bodies and one very confused little girl.

Like any decent person, Kai decided that leaving Krista on her own was not an option and decided to take her with him -- just temporarily, he insisted, until he could find her a home. Unfortunately, it turns out that the government are curious as to why one of their space stations have stopped responding. And they'd quite like to know where their very expensive investment has gone.

Krista's canon point is roughly a month after her rescue from the S.S Vulcan, during which she's been aboard Kai's ship, the Victory Howl. She's slowly beginning to come out of her shell, but has yet to make any real progress. Basically, if her canon was a forty episode anime, her canon point would be something like episode ten, if that makes any sense.

Abilities: Krista is genetically engineered to have absolutely perfect memory and is literally incapable of forgetting anything. She doesn’t have instant recall, but it is flawless -- ask her to recite a page from a book she read a year ago and, while it’ll take her a second to remember it, she’ll be able to do so word perfect without any apparent struggle.

Of course, her memory doesn't necessarily translate into intelligence and while she might have a lot of knowledge, she doesn't have much understanding. She might be able to recite Atlas Shrugged without missing a beat but she wouldn't understand what the story was about or be able to discern any of the deeper meaning from it. She’s still a child and still very much limited by a child’s understanding of the world, therefore she can’t always apply the things she remembers – she could sit through a physics class and remember everything word for word, but she wouldn’t understand any of the equations or how they work.

On the other hand, Krista can also theoretically learn absolutely anything from a single demonstration -- provided it's explained well enough to her – and can learn through imitation as well. If she was given a detailed enough demonstration, she would be able to expertly imitate just what was done -- though it’s important to remember that she would just be imitating what she was taught rather than enacting any real knowledge.

Language wise, Krista’s mother tongue is German. She basically understands English, even if she can’t speak much of it herself.

First Person: [ Krista's steps off the train are wobbly and unsure and she doesn't look very happy to be climbing off. The train seemed warm and safe somehow -- even if she had no idea as to how she'd ended up on it. Safer than this new, strange place anyway.

It smells strange here -- cold and wet. And it sounds weird as well. The constant comforting hum of the Victory Howl's engines are absent and until now, Krista had no idea just how much she'd miss them.

Kai isn't here. ]

Aaah...

[ Her hands tighten into fists and she ends up gripping the fabric of her skirt tightly, crumpling it between her fingers. Her lips tighten and turn down at the corners, her eyes widen. Then she wets her lips with her tongue and calls out. ]

Kai. Kai...!

[ Her voice echoes around the train station.

No one answers. ]

Third Person: The Victory Howl sounded a lot different from the S.S Vulcan, but that was okay.

The Vulcan purred like a contented cat, the engines so well maintained that they were barely audible but always there. The sound seemed to come and go sometimes -- she could always hear it when she didn't pay any mind but when she tried to take a closer listen it was like the entire station would suddenly fall into a hush. She had known the sound all her life and she still found it strange. It seemed, to Krista's ears, white and clean and cold, just like the rest of the ship.

The Victory Howl was like a totally different world. There was nothing clean or cold or sterile there. The ship was dark and warm and she loved every inch of it. It didn't purr, it hummed and buzzed and the sound was warm and enveloping and constant. It was like a gentle reminder that she was safe and away from the Vulcan. It soothed her to sleep at night and kept her company while she woke. When Kai wasn't around, she sometimes felt like the ship itself was talking, to keep her spirits up.

Which was why it was so... so unnerving that the sound here, in the city, was so different. There were so many people around that it scared her and she sometimes felt trapped. It was sometimes hard to breath. The noise was the worst -- sometimes it was too quiet, sometimes too loud. Nothing was ever constant, everything kept changing. She hated it here.

She missed the Victory Howl. She missed Kai.

She wanted to go home.
